Here’s a bad omen for the weekend: yesterday I could not get home from work since Route 80 was closed in the afternoon and evening due to a truck which spilled hazardous materials on the roadway. Every other westbound road was at a dead stop, so I had to eat supper at Wendy’s and browse at Barnes & Noble until I met Jean for our 6:30 Yoga class. At least that was relaxing!
I spoke to a cop who was on the scene of the spill and he said that apparently the truck hit the center divider in a one-vehicle accident. Aren’t trucks just grand? I read somewhere that part of the reason trucks are so prominent on the highways is that after World War II the big automobile producers bought up as many trolley systems and train systems as possible for the purpose of putting them out of business so they could sell more cars and trucks. If that is accurate, it means the massive traffic jams across the country, not to mention many of the fatalities, were deliberately created to sell cars.
So who is worse: big auto or big oil? Another reason not to vote for the current pro-big business administration in Washington.
Anybody planning to watch the World Series this weekend? I am not a big watcher of tv, including sports, but I would probably have sneaked a few peeks at it if the Mets had won. It is hard to have any interest in two teams from several thousand miles away. I wonder if other viewers on the east and west coast feel the same way? If so, this World Series might be a ratings disaster.
