This afternoon in the Math Lab one of my students made the unfortunate comment that she “doesn’t like books!” How is that possible, Kruti? I love books so much that I think I am a bookaholic, addicted to buying so many great books that I cannot possibly keep up with reading all of them. The fact that I read so many reviews, primarily of science fiction and historical fiction, encourages my buying since it is hard to resist the 100+ books on my Recommended Reading list, not to mention the 27 complete series I want to read or re-read or finish reading. Why am I saying all of this? Because the darned Science Fiction Book Club website is currently offering a Buy Two–Get One Free sale at the exact same time they have a slew of books I hoped to buy in the near future, including two SFBC exclusives. How could I resist this fiscal persuasion? So tonight I ordered Jonathan Strahan’s Best Short Novels 2006 and Marvin Kaye’s six-novella original anthology Forbidden Planets. To complete the trio, I selected Dan Simmons’ Olympos, the sequel to Ilium (yes, the titles give away the fact that the two books are a future version of the Iliad and Odyssey) which I planned to buy this summer anyway when it is released in paperback.

Now I cannot wait for the start of summer vacation a mere 7 weeks away so I can start reading some of these books on the flight to Italy. The fact that Jean and the boys are currently in their last week of school for the semester has made me even more fidgety. I hope none of this makes me too grumpy to put up with post-AP test seniors who want to “throw in the towel”, which I am determined to resist. ☺
