My classes are considerably larger this year than last year, so that should impact the amount of time I spend grading papers. But I have such nice classes compared to most other teachers, I really cannot complain.
As most of you probably know, I enjoy reading, both books and magazines. The majority of books I read are either science fiction or historical fiction, although I do read some history as well. The magazines are more varied, as I subscribe to some zines for a year or two before letting them lapse and moving onto something else. My current subscriptions are:
• a two-year subscription to Conde Nast Traveler. This offer was so cheap, and it came with a free Road Atlas, that I just could not resist it. I do enjoying travel writing, so I am anticipating the first issue when it comes;
• Locus is the newsletter of the science fiction field, to which I have subscribed continuously since 1972. I would be lost without this zine;
• The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction is a longtime favorite fiction zine of mine. At times I have subscribed to a half-dozen such zines, but this is my only current one (do primarily to time pressure);
• Archaeology is as much about history as it is about archaeology, making it doubly-fascinating. However, I am nearly a year behind in reading it, so I plan to let it lapse this December, then renew it when (if) I ever catch up on it;
• Historical Fiction Review / Solander are the companion newsletters of the historical fiction field. As with Archaeology, I am a year behind in my reading and plan to drop them for a year in hopes of catching up during that time;
• Saveur is a cooking magazine which is fun reading. The recent two issues were devoted to Texas barbecue and hamburgers. This was a free subscription, which I might renew when it expires.
