I love reading fiction magazines, primarily those which contain science fiction, fantasy, historical fiction and any combination of the above. For more than 30 years I subscribed to a series of great magazines with titles such as Galaxy Magazine, Worlds of IF, The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction and Asimov’s SF Magazine. I let all my subscriptions lapse a half-dozen years ago because I was unable to keep up with all the reading, and trying to do so was interfering with my reading books.
But I still dabble in fiction magazine occasionally. Currently I have a four-issue subscription to a semi-annual small press zine with the cute title Lady Churchill’s Rosebud Wristlet. Its stories run between “mainstream” fiction and borderline fantasies.
Yesterday in the mail I got the first issue of a new British magazine entitled Postscripts. It is published by Peter Crowther, whose small press PS Publishing has put out a fabulous series of novellas the past few years–a bunch of which have been re-issued in groups of four each in books, which I have enjoyed reading a lot. Postscripts is a blend of f&sf plus other genres such as mysteries and adventure fiction, kind of like such popular early 20th century fiction magazines as Argosy (which itself has been revived lately) and All-Story Weekly. I am looking forward to reading the four issues of the quarterly magazine and, if it reaches my admittedly-high expectations, I will consider sating my fiction magazine addiction with Postscripts on a regular basis.
