We’ve seen two more movies recently. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was harmless fun. Jean read the entire series, and liked them, so I have seen all the movies with her. I enjoy the characters and visuals, but the movies do not make total sense, obviously leaving much of the plot and logic out.

The best movie I’ve seen so far this summer (out of 5) is Crazy, Stupid Love. At times it was very funny, with a very serious underlying plot, and there was absolutely nothing sophomoric about it. Steve Carrell was very good in it, and it is one of only 2 movies this summer that I recommend unreservedly (the other being Super 8, although that was more of a joy ride than a serious movie).

Currently reading. While everybody else seems to be reading George R.R. Martin’s latest historical/fantasy epic bestseller, I’m reading the second volume of his collected short fiction Dreamsongs, Volume 2,and it is excellent, not surprisingly since Martin is one of my favorite authors. If the epic series is this good, it would be worth reading, even at 6,000+ pages so far!

Currently listening. I’ve been having a John Sebastian music festival lately, first listening to the Lovin’ Spoonful Anthology, an absolutely fabulous collection, and now his boxed set Faithful Virtue, which contains his five solo albums, plus a few additional singles and Woodstock performances. He is one of the undeservedly-forgotten superstars of rock and roll, and I recommend both of the above cds highly.
