Happy Easter everybody! The world is divided into two types of people, those who eat to live, and those who live to eat. I DEFINITELY fall into the latter group, as anybody who reads THE PASSING SCENE can attest, since in many ways my journal is obsessed with food. Not surprisingly, Easter is one of my favorite holidays because it brings with it one of the most wonderful foods ever created in the wonderful Italian cuisine: PIZZA GHENA. Imagine a wrapping of pizza dough stuffed with sausage, hard-boiled eggs, ricotta, mozzarella, parmigiana, and Italian seasonings, all baked to absolute perfection! *yummy* Admittedly it is one of the most saturated fat filled foods ever created, and the low-carb people would probably gag at the mere sight of it, but that’s their problem. For me, how can a little clogging of the arteries compare to the food of the gods?
A FEW COMMENTS ON THE HUGO NOMINATIONS: I was really pleased that some fine stories got nominated this year, and the list does not seem dominated by the same ol' names, so maybe there is a chance for some truly-deserving winners (such as Jeffrey Ford's magnificent "The Empire of Ice Cream").
But those fan categories! Does FILE 770 really deserve a Hugo nomination? It is hardly ever published anymore and, when it is, the news is several years out of date! That's a travesty. And speaking of travesties, what about Jeff Berkwits, Bob Devney, and John L. Flynn as Best Fan Writer? I am a fairly active fanzine reader, both on paper and online, and I don't think I've EVER read anything by any of those three writers. Apparently this is a category requiring so few nominations that people with supportive friends can get on the ballot, whether they deserve it or not. I'm not a voter, but if I were my vote would go to Cheryl Morgan.
