Thursday night I finished reading the book Moonfall, in which much of the climax included devastating tsunamis worldwide due to falling pieces of the shattered moon. Then I awoke Friday to news about a real devastating tsunami in Japan, which was heading across the Pacific and was minutes away from hitting Hawaii. Meanwhile, portions of the west coast of the US were being evacuated. Listening further, the news was even worse: one of the worst earthquakes in recorded history striking Japan, setting off the tsunami, followed by numerous aftershocks and possible radiation leakage from a damaged nuclear reactor. Those poor people trapped on those little islands, without even a safe place to evacuate to.
It seems as if the planet is going crazy in recent years. Not just the people–although humans certainly seem to be self-destructing–but the physical planet. In recent years there have been the tsunami in Indonesia, the earthquakes in Haiti and New Zealand, now this one in Japan. Not to mention overall worse weather patterns year-round. Is global warming possibly responsible for all of this? If so, things are not going to get much better; rather, as global warming intensifies, things should get steadily worse. It might not matter if humans self-destruct; the planet might get rid of humanity on its own.
And that's my cheery little posting for this Saturday. Have a nice weekend!
