There is currently a feud between the bully governor and several of the state’s Boards of Education who are giving contract extensions to their superintendents in advance of the February deadline when the governor has capped all salaries at his salary. He has instructed the county superintendents to deny all such extensions, even though there is no law giving him that authority. The state association of Boards of Education is considering suing, which they should do. Since the governor’s election a year ago, the entire state has rolled over for him, including the state legislature, and it is about time somebody stands up to his bullying.

I have an innate dislike of anybody who refers to Thanksgiving as “Turkey Day.” Have they totally forgotten that this holiday is supposed to be an opportunity to be thankful for all the good things we have in our lives, not an excuse to overeat and begin Christmas shopping the next day? To me, it is symptomatic of all that is wrong in this country: materialism and greed run wild without any thoughts of responsibility and gratitude.

Currently reading: I generally read several items simultaneously, and I am currently reading four things:
Delizia!, a nonfiction book about the history of Italian cooking;
The Mammoth Book of the Western , short stories;
• a 1952 issues of Galaxy Science Fiction;
• one of Bill Watterson’s fabulous Calvin and Hobbes books Weirdos From Another Planet.
